The TSR (Texas School Ready) Project is geared toward improving the school readiness of children entering kindergarten. The key ingredients of TSR include:
- A partnership among child care and early education programs
- Implementing a teacher training program designed by the State Center for Early Childhood Development at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center
- Using research-based state-approved curriculum
- Professional development for teachers through 20 two-hour face-to-face trainings, one to four hours of face-to-face mentoring per month in the classroom, and an on-line discussion-networking group with other preschool teachers
TSR includes hands-on training for child care providers in:
- Classroom management
- Letter knowledge
- Read-alouds
- Phonological awareness
- Math
- Written expression
- Building vocabulary
- Science
- Social/emotional
- Response to intervention
- Children’s talk
- Special needs
TSR assesses children three times a year in:
- Rapid letter naming
- Vocabulary
- Phonological awareness
- Math
- Book and print
- Writing
- Social and emotional development
