The following types of child care must either be licensed or registered: Licensed Child Care Centers, Licensed Child Care Homes, and Registered Child Care Homes.
Licensed Child Care Centers
May care for 13 or more children under the age of 14 for less than 24 hours per day.
Licensed Child Care Homes
May care for 7-12 children under the age of 14 for less than 24 hours per day. Licensed Child Care Offices and Child Care Homes are routinely monitored and inspected by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) every 5-12 months or more frequently if a report is received related to child abuse, neglect, or violations of DFPS minimum standards.
Registered Child Care Homes
Provide care for up to six children under the age of 14 in the caregiver’s home; they may also care for up to six more school-age children. The number of children allowed in the home is determined by the ages of the children. No more than 12 children can be in care at one time, including children of the caregiver.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services inspects registered Child Care Homes every 1-2 years.
